Naming Of Facilities Policy

Please note that this policy has not yet been revised or converted to the new format.

Council may name university buildings, parts of buildings, or other distinct sections of a campus to recognise:

  • significant contribution to the university;
  • significant contribution to public life; or
  • significant benefaction to the university.

Naming of facilities in recognition of significant contributions to the university or public life

An appropriate interval of time is necessary for consideration of formal requests for recognition. Council will not normally consider the naming of part of the university after a member of staff until such time as that person has ceased to be a paid employee of the university for at least two years.

In evaluating any proposal, Council will consider all the circumstances including:

  • the duration of the proposed naming;
  • the terms or basis of the proposed naming, if any;
  • the possible impact of the proposed naming on the university’s name, reputation or other interests;
  • the appropriateness of the person, organisation or body being commemorated in relation to the part of the university proposed to be named.

Recommendations for naming are to be forwarded by the Dean or other university officer with responsibility for the relevant part of the university to the Physical Resources Sub-Committee which, after appropriate consultation, will then make a recommendation to the Resources and Finance Committee detailing the necessary background information. A final decision will be made and a recommendation forwarded to Council for endorsement.

Formal requests for recognition of significant contribution to the university and significant contribution to public life are to be confidential, and not discussed with individuals or their families prior to consideration by Council.

Naming of facilities in recognition of significant benefactions to the university

In consideration of the need to consolidate gifts to the university expeditiously, the following requires pre approval for naming rights in order to allow parties involved in raising funds to proceed in a timely manner. This requirement does not preclude unsolicited approaches/donations to the University.

All proposals identifying and offering naming rights as recognition to prospective benefactors must:

  • Be included in an official fundraising campaign plan, which in turn must be signed off by the relevant Dean and the University Development and Alumni Office.
  • List the names of all prospective donors being offered naming rights and specific area/s to be named.
  • Detail all conditions regarding the naming rights including:
    • Amount of benefaction;
    • The duration of naming rights offered in each case;
    • Suggested wording of the naming rights.
  • Be submitted to Physical Resources Sub-Committee for forwarding to Resources and Finance Committee and then Council for approval prior to making the offer to any prospective benefactor.
