Educational Technology Policy

Resource Usage and Planning

Monash University shall take into account the following when evaluating the provision of educational and information technology services both within faculties and through central service provision:

• The range and appropriateness of services provided for student-centred flexible learning.
• Cost-effectiveness of service provision (including comparison with external providers).
• Existence of documented quality assurance criteria for the delivery of these services.
• Existence of procedures for monitoring quality of service (including feedback from teaching staff and students) and setting and monitoring priorities.

These planning objectives shall be addressed by designated academic support units or administrative units for integration into appropriate existing University plans and planning processes.

That the above approach to the evaluation of service provision be integrated into the process of development of the University’s new Intranet Structure and services.

Software platforms to support learning and teaching shall possess the following characteristics:

• an appropriate flexible pedagogical model;
• open standards;
• a high level of flexibility in developing, storing, delivering and maintaining content material;
• comprehensive communication and group management facilities, and
• comprehensive assignment management and security capabilities.

Faculty Level Support and Communication

Educational technology planning at faculty level should:

1. provide a supportive environment which encourages staff to explore and use computer based learning or multimedia in teaching;
2. provide a visionary environment which identifies, implements and maintains infrastructure requirements;
3. explore and adopt measures to enhance income from faculty educational technology resources;
4. monitor and evaluate the utility of educational technology usage.

Cooperation and communication between faculties on educational technology activities and developments requires the establishment of a senior University Committee to manage, promote and monitor collaborative activities and to formulate appropriate policies to enhance quality teaching and incorporate best practice in educational technology. This could either be a new committee of an appropriately expanded existing committee.

Both the University and faculties of the University should adopt and implement the widest possible range of approaches and techniques to encourage staff to become involved in the use of educational technology.

Appropriate Use of Educational Technology

Faculties shall retain autonomy in determining a design for educational technology. Each Faculty has its own way of teaching and flexibility has advantages.

Purpose

The objective of this policy is to outline factors for evaluating information and educational technology at Monash.

Scope

This policy applies to the academic use of educational and information technologies throughout Monash.
