Scope

All coursework units
All campuses
All staff and students

Policy Statement

  • Monash University adheres to all relevant national and Victorian legislation and codes of practice governing the use of animals in coursework programs.
  • Monash is committed to replacing, reducing and refining the use of animals in coursework programs.
    • Animals used in coursework programs will be replaced by non-animal alternatives, unless this cannot be done without diminishing a program’s educational value. Animals will not be used for teaching activities unless there are no alternatives that achieve all of the stated educational objectives.
    • Where replacement would diminish the program’s educational value, the numbers of animals used in coursework programs will be reduced to the minimum necessary for achieving all of the program’s stated educational objectives.
    • Where replacement would diminish the program’s educational value, the techniques employed in using animals in coursework programs will be refined to reduce the adverse impact on animals. All use of animals will be guided by a genuine commitment to the welfare of the animals.
  • In coursework units using animals, students will be given the opportunity to discuss the ethical, social and scientific issues involved in the use of animals for scientific and educational purposes.
