Blind Marking of Examinations Procedures

Please note that these procedures will be replaced by the Assessment in Coursework Programs Policy and the Unit Assessment Procedures as of 15 February 2010.  Details can be found in Current Policy Projects.

Students sitting examinations are advised in the pre examination address by the Invigilator in Charge NOT to place their name on script books or examination papers. Students will be requested to record their student ID, desk number and unit code.

At the conclusion of each examination, the attendance list is placed inside the sealed plastic bag containing the completed script books and returned to the academic or teaching department as indicated on the delivery instructions provided by the teaching department.

Prior to marking, the attendance list must be removed from the script book bag and stored separately to ensure that it is not available to markers.

The attendance list contains the student details:

  • Student Number
  • Student full name
  • Desk Number
  • Present / absent indicator

B. Accuracy and Integrity

Markers must not refer to the attendance list or any other method of identifying the student’s name during the marking process.

Examination papers may be kept in order by reference to the desk number.

Faculties may like to consider the following options to assist in the process of transferring marks from script books to mark sheets:

  1. Utilising the Windows Find Function (F5)

Locate the correct record by entering the student number from the script book to the Find (Control F) function.

If the record is not found refer to the examination attendance list.

Cross check the Desk Number and Student Number on the script book with the attendance list to locate the correct student record.

  1. Recording the Mark & Grade on the Attendance List by hand

After completion of the assessment process, cross reference the Student Number and Desk Number from the script book to the attendance list, recording the mark against the student record on that list.

Enter student results to your spreadsheet using the attendance list as the basis. i.e. performing a number / name check for each entry.

  1. Use the VLOOK UP function in Excel

The VLOOKUP function provides an accurate method of transferring data between 2 Excel worksheets or files.

Scope

This policy applies to all written end of semester examinations conducted by Monash University. The policy does not apply to any other assessment pieces due to practicality and cost constraints.

Blind marking is not required in the following circumstances:

  • Artistic and performance activities
  • Oral examinations
  • Laboratory-based examinations
  • Class tests
  • Assignments
  • For Off -Campus Learning students (where the student name is crucial to administrative procedures)

Definitions

Blind Marking: Blind marking at Monash is the process where the examination script does not hold any personal information about the student other than the student identification number. Markers shall preserve the anonymity of a student’s identity until the marking of the examination paper is finalised.
